中州特產，中藥上品。系蟬科昆蟲紅娘子的干燥體。形似蟬，體小，頭胸部均呈黑色。頭部兩側有復眼，大而突出。復眼前方有觸角1對。身體左右兩側有兩個大型板塊，呈朱紅色。腹部血紅色，基部黑色。一般為6足，唯有葉縣云夢山（俗稱紫云山）的紅娘為8足。葉縣鄉間流傳有“搬云梯，上紫云，捉個紅娘八條腿”的歌謠。它多棲息于低矮樹叢中，不能高飛。每年6～8月朝露未干時波捉為宜。因為它分泌的毒液能刺激人的皮膚氣泡，故捕時宜戴口罩及手套，捕后蒸死或烤死，曬干即可入藥。以身干、翅黑、腹紅、色艷、完整不碎、新鮮者為佳。入藥可攻毒、通淤、破積。外用治瘰疬、癬皰；內服治雪淤、經閉、狂犬咬傷。據老中醫談云夢山紅娘療效高、副作用小，遠近聞名。
