白蠟為鹿邑土特產之一，是雄性白蠟蟲附在叢生三、四尺高的白蠟條上吸其津液而分泌的動物蠟。
      
    鹿邑生產白蠟已有四百多年的歷史，始于明代末期。清代中葉已享譽全國，產地在縣城近郊西北各村，民國年間，馮橋、段莊、大劉莊，小劉莊，于莊和大周寨一帶，田野白蠟條連片成行，是產白蠟的中心。
      
    白蠟是白蠟蟲的分泌物。蠟蟲是白蠟條、白蠟樹的寄生蟲，蟲從外地引進。每年的“小滿”前后，蠟農即從湖北荊州購買蠟蟲，蠟蟲季節性強，販運中必計時往販，芒種前10日須到家，并當即放入“白蠟條”束中。如拖延時日，蠟蟲在中途就會破殼而出，使販運者無法收拾。故有“小滿不在地，芒種不在家”之說。蠟由雄蟲吮吸白蠟樹汁后所泌。十月蠟熟，采下進行“盆制”加工。以蠟面隆凸如獅頭，邊有柳葉梗，底呈蟒皮紋，潔白如玉，光滑如鏡者為上品。
      
    白蠟用途較廣，是醫藥、紡織及制作摸型等工業的重要原料。藥用“白蠟油”有祛風。止疼，化淤、消炎，收斂、生肌的作用，是治外傷的良藥。對牲畜的創傷，人的惡瘡，創傷等均有特殊療效。
 

Luyi Insect Wax 

    Insect wax is a specialty in Luyi County, which is an animal wax made by secretions of male wax insects which is parasites of Chinese ashes and is introduced from other places before and after Lesser Fullness. It has a produced history of more than 400 years, which stems from the end of Ming Dynasty and becomes famous in the whole country in the middle of Qing Dynasty, when the producing areas are located in villages around the county.
      
    Insect wax has a wide usage. First of all, it is an important material for biomedical industry, textile industry, Die & Mould Industry and so on. Besides, medicinal insect wax oil has medical functions of relieving rheumatic pains, quitting aches, diminishing inflammation, restraining oneself, curing external hurts, etc. Furthermore, it has special curative effects on livestock’ hurts, human ulsers and wounds.
