密縣寒羊是國內綿羊優質品種之一。其毛在紡織工業史上久負盛譽。據《河南出口商品志》記載：在歷史上河南羊毛集散為鄭州、淮陽、密縣三個地方，所產皮毛馳名國內，遠銷國外。 密縣寒羊具有耐粗飼，易管理，抗病力強，生長發育快，成熟早、繁殖力強，肉用性能好等優點，密縣寒羊毛細毛率高達97.21%，凈毛率為52.52%。密縣寒羊因毛細而潔白，質量居全國第一位。民國期間，就有寒羊毛通過上海、天津等港口遠銷國外。
        
    近幾年來，政府非常重視對密縣寒羊的改良和推廣工作。1985年1月31日《人民日報》在《密縣推廣改良羊》的報道中說："改良前，全縣養羊23318 只，年產毛量1.19萬公斤，每只平均單產0.51公斤；1983年，全縣養羊5.82萬只，其中密縣改良羊5.57萬只，占95.7%，年產毛量31萬公斤，每只平均單產5.6公斤，比改良前提高9倍，達到全國先進水平。"羊毛制品出口蘇聯、日本和英國。
