息縣香稻丸,栽培歷史悠久,據民間傳說,神農氏的小女兒路經息縣夏莊南張莊時,撒下一把稻谷,當年收后,米香溢人,被一老農收藏于次年種植,繁衍至今。又 相傳南海觀世音菩薩應西天如來佛祖之約到天庭講學,在路過河南息縣的時候打個噴嚏,結果把寶瓶中的萬種之種的香米稻種打到了凡間.息縣香稻丸,清代時曾被列為貢米,191 4年參加過美國舊金山的萬國商品賽會。息縣香稻丸產于本縣夏莊、項店一帶,為河南名產, 其色彩青白如珍珠,香氣馥郁,素有“一塊稻香滿坡,一撮米香滿鍋,一家做飯香四鄰 ,一盅香酒香滿桌”的盛稱。煮粥蒸米飯時只需加少許“香稻丸”,則香溢滿屋,沁人肺淬,誘人食欲。香稻丸在明清兩代被列為貢品,191 4年參加過美國舊金山的萬國商品賽會。香稻丸含有大量的蛋白質和維生素,能增強人體的抵抗力,改善新陳代謝條件,是治療敗血癥、過敏性疾病、急慢性傳染病的輔助藥物,還能健全人身的毛細血管,對高血壓及心血管病患者大有裨益。用香稻丸、粳米、蓮米加紅棗熬成的“三米湯”為極好的滋補品,具有滋陰、降火、生津、健脾、養胃等功效。息縣以香稻丸為原料制成的香米貢酒濁和醇厚,芳香可口,
屬晚熟粳型香稻。生育期140—150天。株高1.2米左右,分蘗力和成熟率中等。葉片寬長、黃綠色。穗長23厘米,有長芒。每穗著粒85—100個,谷色棕紅,千粒重27克。米粒短圓,無心白,腹白小,色清,如玉,有濃郁的蒲香。熬粥、蒸米飯時若摻香稻丸少許則清香撲鼻。群眾有“一塊稻香滿坡,一撮米香滿鍋,一碗飯香滿桌”的美評。
香稻丸有一定的藥用價值。李時珍《本草綱目》載:“香米能潤心肺,久服輕身延年。”用它加紅棗,蓮籽制成的三丸湯是香甜可口的滋補佳品。
